Today at Mechtronics, we're taking a spin with something essential to your car's smooth operation: the flywheel! You might have heard of it in conjunction with your clutch, but what exactly is this unsung hero of your engine? Let's dive in!

What is a Flywheel?

Imagine a heavy, metal disc, perfectly balanced and spinning. That's essentially what a flywheel is! Located between your engine and your gearbox, it's a crucial component of your car's drivetrain.

What Does a Flywheel Do?

Its primary job is to smooth out the power delivery from your engine. Engines don't produce power in one continuous, smooth flow; they fire in pulses. The flywheel, with its mass, acts like a mini energy reservoir. When a cylinder fires, the flywheel absorbs some of that energy, storing it briefly, and then releases it, ensuring a consistent and steady rotation of the crankshaft.

Think of it like this: without a flywheel, your engine's power would be jerky and uneven, making for a very uncomfortable ride. It also provides the surface for your clutch to engage with, transmitting power from the engine to the transmission when you're ready to get moving!

Signs of Flywheel Wear and Tear

Like any hardworking component, flywheels can show signs of wear. Here are some things to look out for:

  • Vibrations: If you feel excessive vibrations, especially when accelerating or changing gears, it could be a sign of a warped or damaged flywheel.

  • Difficulty Shifting Gears: A worn flywheel can make it harder for your clutch to engage smoothly, leading to clunky or difficult gear changes.

  • Slipping Clutch: While often attributed solely to the clutch itself, a damaged flywheel surface can prevent the clutch from gripping properly, leading to a slipping clutch.

  • Burning Smell: A burning smell, similar to burnt toast, can indicate a flywheel that's overheating due to excessive friction.

  • Chattering or Shuddering: You might experience a chattering or shuddering sensation when you release the clutch pedal, particularly in lower gears.

Why Get Your Flywheel Done When Your Clutch Is?

This is a question we hear a lot at Mechtronics, and for good reason! Here's why we almost always recommend replacing or machining your flywheel when you're getting a new clutch:

  1. Optimised Performance: A new clutch needs a perfectly smooth and flat surface to engage with for optimal performance and longevity. If your old flywheel is worn, warped, or has hot spots, it can significantly reduce the lifespan and effectiveness of your brand new clutch.

  2. Labour Cost Savings: The labour involved in accessing the flywheel is almost identical to the labour required to replace the clutch. If you only do the clutch now and the flywheel fails a few months down the line, you'll be paying for the same extensive labour twice! It's a classic "do it once, do it right" scenario.

  3. Prevent Future Issues: Replacing both components simultaneously ensures that your entire clutch system is in prime condition, minimising the risk of further issues and breakdowns.

  4. Integrated System: The clutch and flywheel work together as an integrated system. Wear on one often impacts the other. Replacing them both ensures a balanced and efficient power transfer.
