Preparation and Access:
First, we safely lift your vehicle. Then, our technician disconnects related components like the battery, starter motor, gear linkage, and driveshafts. Depending on the vehicle layout, parts of the exhaust or subframe might also need removing to clear the way to the gearbox.
Gearbox Removal:
With access cleared, we carefully unbolt the gearbox housing (bell housing) from the engine block and remove the gearbox itself. This is often heavy and requires proper support during removal and installation.
Old Clutch Removal & Inspection:
Once the gearbox is out, the old clutch assembly (pressure plate and friction disc) is visible, bolted to the engine's flywheel. We unbolt and remove these parts, along with the release bearing/mechanism. We then thoroughly inspect the flywheel for heat damage, cracks, or excessive wear – it may need resurfacing or replacing for the new clutch to work properly.
New Clutch Installation:
The new clutch disc is carefully aligned using a special tool, and the new pressure plate is fitted over it and bolted securely to the flywheel, tightening the bolts to the manufacturer's precise torque specifications. A new release bearing is also typically installed at this stage.
Reassembly:
The gearbox is carefully manoeuvred back into position, ensuring it aligns correctly with the engine and the newly installed clutch assembly. It's then bolted securely back onto the engine, and all the components removed in Step 1 (driveshafts, starter motor, linkages, etc.) are reconnected.
Final Checks and Testing:
Any fluids drained during the process (like gearbox oil) are refilled to the correct level. We check the clutch pedal operation and make any necessary adjustments. Finally, we perform thorough checks and usually a road test to ensure the new clutch engages smoothly and gear changes are crisp and effortless.
