Kilmarnock's Independent Clutch & Flywheel Specialists

From standard manual replacements to complex DSG clutch packs and Dual-Mass Flywheels. We provide OEM-quality clutch fitting for cars, performance hatchbacks, and commercial vans—saving you hundreds off main dealer prices.

Save up to 60% on Main Dealer Prices

When your clutch fails, your first instinct might be to call the main dealership. But when that quote arrives, it is usually accompanied by astronomical labour rates and a weeks-long waiting list just to get the car through the doors.

At Mechtronics, we provide a cost-effective alternative. We offer the exact same high-quality service and fit identical premium OEM parts (like LUK and Sachs), but our hourly labour rate is literally half of what the main dealers charge.

Why Ayrshire Drivers Choose Mechtronics:

  • Experienced, Consistent Technicians: Main dealerships are notorious for high staff turnover, meaning a different, often junior mechanic is working on your car every time. We have been doing this day-in and day-out for years. When you bring your car to us, the same highly experienced technicians are working on your vehicle year after year.

  • Warm & Friendly Customer Service: We don't hide behind service advisors in pristine waiting rooms. We are local, trusted, and believe in transparent, honest communication. We will show you exactly what went wrong with your old clutch and why.

  • Same-Day Turnaround: We know you can't be without your car. We aim to fit most manual clutches in a single day, offering a same-day or next-day turnaround.

  • Short Notice & Vehicle Recovery: A burnt out clutch won't always give you advance warning. If your car is stranded at the side of the road or stuck on your driveway, we offer vehicle recovery and can frequently fit you in at short notice.

The Hidden Cost of the "Cheapest Quote" (Don't Pay for Labour Twice)

When your clutch fails, it is tempting to ring around and just go with the cheapest price you can find. However, in the world of heavy mechanical repairs, the cheapest quote usually hides a massive catch.

Many cheap, quick-fit or backstreet garages artificially lower their prices by cutting critical corners. We see the devastating results of this in our Kilmarnock workshop almost every week.

How Other Garages Cut Corners:

  • Budget, Unbranded Parts: Instead of fitting premium, factory-spec kits (like LUK or Sachs), they install cheap, low-quality friction plates that will start slipping or shuddering again within a year.

  • Ignoring the Slave Cylinder: To make their quote look unbeatable, they will often only replace the clutch plate itself, leaving your old, high-mileage Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC) inside the gearbox.

  • Risking the Flywheel: They will bolt a brand-new clutch directly onto a worn, rattling Dual-Mass Flywheel (DMF) just to get the car out the door quickly.

The Reality: Paying for Labour Twice

Here is the painful truth: taking a gearbox out is a massive, labour-intensive job that takes hours.

If a cheap garage leaves your old slave cylinder in the bell housing and it starts leaking fluid three months down the line, that fluid will destroy your brand-new clutch. To fix it, the entire gearbox has to be removed all over again. You end up paying that massive 5 to 8-hour labour bill twice just to replace a part that should have been changed the first time.

The Mechtronics Promise: Do It Once, Do It Right

We refuse to do half a job. When we quote for a clutch replacement, we quote for the complete repair. We fit premium OEM parts, we always replace the concentric slave cylinder while the gearbox is out, and we give you honest, transparent advice on the exact condition of your flywheel.

Our quote guarantees you won't be broken down at the side of the road again in three months.

Is Your Clutch Slipping or Flywheel Rattling? (How to Spot the Warning Signs)

A clutch rarely fails completely without giving you a few warnings first. If you know what to look—and listen—for, you can often get the car into the workshop before you end up stranded at the side of the road or cause secondary damage to your transmission.

Here are the classic symptoms that tell you it is time to book your car in with our Kilmarnock workshop.

Signs of a Worn or Slipping Clutch:

The friction plate inside your clutch wears down over time, just like your brake pads. When it gets too thin, it loses its grip on the engine's flywheel.

  • The "Rev Spike": This is the most common symptom. You put your foot down to accelerate (especially in a higher gear or going up a hill), the engine RPM shoots up loudly, but the car barely gains any speed.

  • A High Biting Point: You have to lift your foot almost entirely off the clutch pedal before the car actually starts to move.

  • The Burning Smell: An acrid, distinctly burning smell (often resembling burning rubber or harsh chemicals) coming from under the bonnet after driving up a steep incline or pulling a heavy load.

  • Spongy or Stiff Pedal: The clutch pedal feels completely different—either unusually soft and spongy, or incredibly stiff and difficult to press down.

Signs of a Failing Dual-Mass Flywheel:

Modern diesel and high-torque petrol engines use a Dual-Mass Flywheel to absorb harsh engine vibrations and make the car smooth to drive. When the internal springs of the DMF collapse, it can cause severe drivability issues.

  • The "Death Rattle" at Idle: A loud, metallic clattering or rattling noise coming from the engine bay when the car is stationary and idling in neutral.

  • The Noise Changes with the Pedal: The metallic rattle completely disappears or significantly changes pitch as soon as you press the clutch pedal down to the floor.

  • Harsh Juddering on Takeoff: The entire car violently shakes or judders when you try to pull away from a standstill in 1st gear or Reverse.

  • Vibration Through the Pedal: You can physically feel an abnormal, pulsing vibration through the clutch pedal or the floorpan of the car while driving.

Don't Ignore the Warning Signs

If your clutch is slipping, the extreme heat generated can permanently scorch and warp your flywheel, turning a simple clutch replacement into a much more expensive job. Similarly, if a rattling Dual-Mass Flywheel is ignored for too long, it can actually shatter, sending metal shrapnel straight through your gearbox casing.

DSG, S-Tronic & Powershift Clutch Packs

Replacing the clutch in a modern automatic or dual-clutch transmission is not a standard mechanical job; it requires highly specialised extraction tooling and dealer-level software calibration. We are experts in replacing wet and dry clutch packs for VAG DSG and S-Tronic systems (VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda), as well as the notoriously complex Ford and Volvo Powershift units. We also handle advanced automatic drivetrain repairs across BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Jaguar, ensuring perfect mechatronic alignment and seamless shifting.

Commercial Fleet & Van Clutches

When a work van is off the road, your business loses money. We specialise in heavy-duty clutch replacements and dual mass flywheel replacements for hard-working commercial vehicles, including the Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, Vauxhall Vivaro, VW Transporter, and Renault Trafic.

  • Trusted by the Trade: We are proud to be the go-to specialists for local businesses like Mascot Civils, who trust us to keep their fleet of Long Wheelbase (LWB) Transit vans moving despite the heavy payload abuse they take daily on construction sites.

  • More Than Just Clutches: Because we are a fully operational mechanical and auto-electrical garage, we don't just stop at the gearbox. While your van or car is on the ramp, we can easily take care of the smaller jobs—from swapping out a blown bulb and fitting new tyres to complex engine diagnostics—saving you another trip to the garage.

High-Performance & Upgraded Clutches

Running a mapped hot hatch or a tuned track car? Pushing extra horsepower and torque through a standard factory clutch will cause it to slip and burn out almost instantly. We supply and install uprated performance parts designed specifically to handle the extra load. From Sachs organic clutches and upgraded flywheels to heavy-duty paddle setups, we ensure your drivetrain can actually put that newly mapped power down to the tarmac safely and reliably.
